Although it’s uncommon and downright shitty- a few places around the USA have reported that upon voting for Obama and reviewing on their electronic ballot, it had Romney selected. And upon revising their vote, it still previewed as a Romney vote.
Aboriginal Petroglyphs Destroyed by Vandals Armed with Acid and a Drill
“To my absolute horror, I could see what kind of damage had been done…I just couldn’t believe it.”
“The vandals used a truck to get to the rock and suspects they used a power washer to remove the lichen covering the symbols before spraying acid on the paintings and drilling away the carvings with a rock bore or hammer drill.
“We have been violated, future generations have been robbed and the world has been deprived of the ancient knowledge contained within these artifacts,” Knowlton wrote in his report. “This urgent matter must follow a formal plan of action at all levels.””
I can’t even think of obscenities strong enough to convey how disgusted and horrified I am. I don’t have the words.
Who the fuck does something like this? WHO THE FUCK DOES THIS THAT DELIBERATELY?
What the fuck goes wrong in a person’s head and/or heart, such that they are so opposed to the notion of markers of cultural history that they will take the time and effort to specifically go out of their way to destroy it? Does not compute. Does not compute at all.
This has 66 notes.
A gifset of a woman cutting up some shoddily constructed mass-market books has over 7000, with graphic and horrible death threats.
Let that sink in, tumblr.
AT this point I am not even sorry. This world is going to shit and will fall to dust because we deserve it.
That is thousands of years of tradition of connection of culture , CONNECTED TO THE PLANET
TO THESE PEOPLE
and instead of thankingw hatever heavenly earthly being you know that we are even allowed access to the wonders of this creation?
LETS ACID SPRAY IT!!!
I hope one of em falls in said tank or drops it directly on their genitalia and dies.
I would like it if a case of festering oozing pustules covered the vandals bodies perhaps combined with an intense itching situation.
“Knowlton [Piikani First Nation] pointed out in his report that this is just the latest in a string of vandalized pictogram and petroglyph sites in Alberta and thinks someone is out to destroy evidence that could prove the Blackfoot First Nations had a written language before European migration.
“I suspect the link to this destruction is to nullify my long held claim that the Blackfoot had a written language before missionaries arrived, which could force archeologists to rewrite history,” Knowlton wrote in his report.

I see you racist colonialist assholes. I see you.
I just fucking quit.
Like You can’t leave ANYTHING ?
IS your self/life culture that fucking depraved that folks can’t have language .
This is ethnocide. This is genocide. This is the systematic attempt to erase the memory of an entire people from the face of the Earth. There are really no words for this…
Humanity is a scourge.
If you do not spread this, then regardless of your intentions you accomplishing the very thing these subhuman, autonomous wastes of flesh are accomplishing - ignorance. The ability to ignore the cries of a whole people whose very lives are being destroyed at the foundation of what it means to be human - language and all that it entails.
So do spread, if you sincerely appreciate your ability to speak, communicate, have a culture, and give meaning to the chaos of life in whatever way. Spread if you appreciate your humanity.
Imagine this: The three men sit in a Moscow court, awaiting their verdict. The youngest, an experienced dissident described by Western media as a “sultry sex symbol” with “Angelina Jolie lips,” glances at his colleague, an activist praised by the Associated Press for his “pre-Raphaelite looks.” Between them sits a third man, whose lack of glamour has led the New Republic to label him “the brain” and deem his hair a “poof of dirty blonde frizz.” The dissidents — or “boys” as they are called in headlines around the world — have been the subject of numerous fashion and style profiles ever since they first spoke out against the Russian government. “He’s a flash of moving color,” the New York Timeswrites approvingly about their protests, “never an individual boy.”
If this sounds ridiculous, it should — and not just because I’ve changed their gender. These are actual excerpts from the Western media coverage of Pussy Riot, the Russian dissident performance art collective sentenced to two years in prison for protesting against the government. Pussy Riot identifies as feminist, but you would never know it from the Western media, who celebrate the group with the same language that the Russian regime uses to marginalize them.

REBLOGGING FOR PERFECT TITLE
Perfect article. (I do not expect that from the Atlantic, usually.)
“In 2005, film critic Nathan Rabin coined the phrase Manic Pixie Dream Girl to describe a woman who “exists solely in the fevered imaginations of sensitive writer-directors to teach broodingly soulful young men to embrace life and its infinite mysteries and adventures.” You might say that Pussy Riot are being treated as something like Manic Pixie Dream Dissidents, blank revolutionary slates onto which Westerners are projecting their hipster fantasies.”
I’ve absolutely been guilty of this in the past… really been given pause here.

Look at his hands, look at her balance. She’s not daintily placing her foot in the air, she is off-kilter. The placement of his legs and the force he is exerting on her is pulling her off of her feet. Look at his hand on her waist. He’s forcing her hips into that position. Look at her head in the crook of his elbow, he has entire control over the position of her head. Look at the way they kiss, look at his closed fist. This wasn’t a gentle advance with an opportunity for dissent (or consent), this was a woman ripped off of her feet and molested. This is rape culture.
Man, shut the fuck up.
No, this is the pure ecstatic joy of victory in Japan. They weren’t a couple. They were strangers. Yes, it was a surprise. But it was done out of joy and not for anger or power or control. The sailor was kissing any and all females on the street. It just so happens that this was the picture that Eisenstaedt thought was best.
Nobody’s saying he thought “I’m going to go assert me some power.”
But think about it. When you get really happy, do you ever punch the air in excitement? You do, right? Or something similar.
Do you ever go down the street and punch people in the face? Because you’re so happy?
No, you don’t. It would be the same kind of exuberant gesture, but your mind recognizes that… other people have feelings and rights, and when you exercise physical exuberance on them like that, it’s called “violence” and it is a bad thing.
For his joy and elation to be channeled in this way, “kissing any and all ‘females*’ on the street”, that says something about the way that women are constructed in his head, about what boundaries he does and doesn’t observe and how strong they are.
Without more data it would be impossible to say exactly what it says about those things, but we know that he sees women as being 1) interchangeable to a sufficient degree and 2) publicly accessible to a sufficient degree for this to register as an acceptable course of action.
No, he’s not stopping and doing some complex calculation on that score. That’s the point. This is how he acts when he doesn’t think, when he’s uninhibited.
That’s rape culture at work. That’s a rape culture mindset.
Here, since people are ignoring the links being posted in other comments, I’m going to excerpt from the article:
the kiss did kind of bother someone else, though: the woman in the nurse’s uniform, Greta Zimmer, who wasn’t even a nurse. She was a 21-year-old dental assistant from Queens, who, having heard rumors about the end of the war, walked over to Times Square from her office on Lexington Avenue. George says he was so drunk, he doesn’t even remember the kiss. Greta says she’ll never forget it.
Greta Zimmer was born and raised in Austria, and in 1939, after much debate, her parents insisted that Greta and her two sisters flee to America. They were among the last refugees to make it out, and even on the afternoon of Aug. 14, as Greta read the illuminated news crawl declaring the end of the war, she had no idea where her parents were, or if they were even alive.
She isn’t sure how long she was standing there; maybe minutes. “And then I was grabbed,” she says. “That man was very strong. I wasn’t kissing him. He was kissing me.”Just as suddenly, he let her go. George stumbled off towards the subway, Rita trailing behind, and Greta walked back to her office. George and Rita never discussed the kiss, nor did Greta tell anyone what had happened to her.
Oh, he’s just so happy! Oh, he’s just so elated! Oh, he’s just so relieved! But what about her? And he did it to “every ‘female’” he saw? Okay. So we know at least one of them didn’t like it. Why would we imagine she’s the exception? He’s drunk, he’s strong, he’s a stranger, he’s made the decision (because he has such joy in his heart!) and they have no say in it… none of them know if it’s just going to be a kiss, if their own boyfriend/husband/lover might see it and what they might think, what consequences they might suffer (this is the 1940s!) if someone thinks they are “loose” or “fast”…
Why are we assuming they’re happy? Because we know he is? That’s a very dangerous line of thought when we’re talking about whether or not something is rape culture. “Well, he was enjoying himself… maybe she was, too?”
*Protip: “females” are how we refer to biological specimens. That is a human in the picture, and while she is female (adjective), she is a woman (noun). The tendency to talk about women like one is a Star Trek alien or we are heads of breeding cattle is all part and parcel of this.
And nobody asked her at the time. And this pic is sold to the masses as uncomplicated joy. And it takes me til NOW to hear her voice. Jesus CHRIST
But somehow it’s not rape culture, because he was so happy the war was over.
is it really so hard to understand that how he/we celebrated the victory over Japan is the variable here?
All of this commentary is great, and I think my followers should read it.
I also wanted to say that there’s a statue of the two folks in this picture in Sarasota. So it’s immortalized in more ways than one. We build statues to rape culture, folks. Congratulations.
Here’s a picture:
fuck. I’d never heard her own words.
Pe’ Sla: The Heart Of All That Is: Help Save the Lakota Heart Land!
Pe’ Sla is an area in the Black Hills of South Dakota (just west of Rapid City) that is considered by the Lakota people to be the Center and heart of everything that is. It is part of our creation story. It is a sacred place. We perform certain ceremonies at Pe’ Sla which sustain the Lakota way of life and keep the universe in harmony.
This area is currently owned by the Reynolds family. They plan to auction off almost 2,000 acres on August 25, 2012 to the highest bidder. It is likely that the state of South Dakota will put a road directly through Pe’ Sla and open up this sacred place for development.
The seven bands of the Lakota/Dakota/Nakota Oyate (people) aka Oceti Sakowin (Great Sioux Nation) have a collective effort to buy as much of Pe’Sla as we can at this auction (although we also believe that the land cannot be owned and that our sacred places were illegally taken by the United States). Yet we are trying to work within the current U.S. laws to regain custody of our sacred sites and prevent future road and industrial development.
Our sacred ways must be protected and passed on to our future generations so that our children may live. This area of the Paha Sapa (Black Hills) is also home to many plants and animals who should also be protected. In fact, many consider that the area should possibly be a historical site, which would also assist in protecting it from future development as well.
As Lakota people, our ancestors prayed here, at Pe’ Sla, at certain times of year, when the stars aligned. We cannot go elsewhere to pray. We were meant to pray here. This is what they do not understand.
Please help the Lakota people. “Let us put our minds together and see what life we can make for our children.” (Chief Sitting Bull, 1877)
We have a group of young professional Native people that are dedicated to the promotion of education, health, leadership, and sovereignity among our indigenous Nations. Our goal is to assist in any way possible the purchase of Pe’ Sla by a collective effort of the seven bands of the Oceti Sakowin (Great Sioux Nation) - the Lakota/Dakota/Nakota people. All proceeds from this campaign will go towards that effort. This area would be open to tribal nations for ceremonial purposes. The plants, animals, water, and air in the area would be respected and honored. Please see http://www.lastrealindians.com/category/chase-i… for more information.
Reblogging this once again!
To discipline misbehaving students, public schools in Ohio and Florida regularly send children to “seclusion” — isolation in a locked cell-like room, old office, or closet, NPR’s State Impact reports. Many of these children are special needs students and their parents are not always told of this disciplinary practice.
Ohio schools — where seclusion is almost completely unregulated — sent students to seclusion rooms 4,236 times in the 2009-2010 school year. Sixty percent of these students had disabilities.
Florida schools secluded students 4,637 times in 2010-2011 and 4,193 in 2011-2012. 42 percent of seclusions were for pre-K through 3rd graders. In the 2011-2012 school year, 300 seclusions lasted more than an hour. The state has just three stipulations for using seclusion rooms: teachers may not choke or suffocate students, the room must be approved by a fire marshal, and the lights must be left on.
But last school year, one Pickerington special-education teacher sent children to a seclusion room more than 60 times, district records show. In nearly all of those incidents, the children were not violent. Often, they were sent to the seclusion room for being “mouthy,” or whining about their school work.
Pickerington Special Education Director Bob Blackburn said the teacher in that classroom was new and that someone in the district has now taught her the right way to use the seclusion room.
Other Pickerington teachers misused the rooms, too, though. In another classroom, children were secluded more than 30 times last school year. Two-thirds of those instances involved misbehavior and not violence, district records show.
Far from benefiting violent or rowdy students, seclusion has been found to be deeply traumatizing, sometimes leading children to hurt or kill themselves. In one special education school in Georgia, a 13-year-old boy hung himself in a seclusion room in November 2004.
“Unfortunately there have been some cases throughout Florida where mostly children with disabilities, autistic kids in particular, have been restrained,” Rep. Ari Porth told StateImpact Florida’s Sarah Gonzalez earlier this year. “I’ve heard on some occasions (students) put in storage closets because the administrator or teacher just doesn’t know how to appropriately handle them.”
Hialeah state Rep. Eddy Gonzalez, a Democrat, introduced a bill this year that would have prohibited schools from secluding students. The bill also limited schools to physically restraining students with disability only when there is “imminent risk of serious injury or death to student or others.”
Only school officials trained to restrain students would be allowed to do so, according to the bill.
The bill died in subcommittee in March.
There are no rules regulating restraint and seclusion in Ohio.

TW: police violence
“unruly crowd” because damn why can’t folks just take a breather and behave themselves when cops are firing guns and releasing dogs at them right?
